IFC Guidance For Retailers Regarding Purchase And Return Policies For Infant Formula Products

Infant formula manufacturers take very seriously their responsibility to provide safe and nutritious infant formula to millions of infants every day. Following these recommended policies will help ensure that infants receive the highest quality infant formula products.

The International Formula Council* (IFC) recommends that all retailers adopt the following guidance to ensure the quality of infant formulas purchased by consumers.

  • Retailers should only buy infant formula products directly from manufacturers or manufacturers’ authorized wholesalers.
  • Retailers should not re-shelve and/or re-sell customer returns.
  • Retailers should consider adopting the following best practices for customer returns:
    • Train employees on the proper handling of returned goods;
    • Designate a separate storage area in the store for customer returns;
    • Supervise/audit the returned goods process to ensure the proper storing and handling of distressed, damaged, and returned products.

For additional food safety and security guidance, industries and businesses should consult the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (http://www.fda.gov) and Health Canada (http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca).
