Breastfeeding Benefits

Breast feeding is the ideal choice for new mothers and has benefits for infants, mothers, families and society. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), breast milk:

  • strengthens the baby’s immune system because it has antibodies that help protect infant from certain infections such as ear and respiratory infections.
  • lessens the occurrence of childhood illnesses such as diarrhea.
  • provides an infant with the proper balance of nutrients required for growth and development.
  • is convenient since breast milk is always available and does not require preparation or storage.
  • helps both mother and infant can benefit psychologically through this close and warm interaction.

A mother’s breast milk provides babies with a combination of nutrients that helps them grow and develop. Breast milk is the most complete form of nutrition for infants. A mother's milk has just the right amount of fat, sugar, water and protein that is needed for a baby's growth and development. It boosts a baby’s immune system to help protect the baby against a variety of allergies and infections. In addition, the proteins and fats in breastmilk are easier to digest.

The AAP further states, "Gradual introduction of iron-enriched solid foods in the second half of the first year should complement the breast milk diet. It is recommended that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months, and thereafter for as long as mutually desired."
